Smartphone Wi-Fi Programming Instructions - BlackBerry

These instructions apply to BlackBerry UMTS/HSPA smartphones only. You must insert an active Bell MTS HSPA SIM card with a valid data plan into your phone.

Tip:

If you receive a failed authentication message such as "Failed to authenticate against the network", then you are probably not authorized to use this service or the service is not available at this time.

Not in Wi-Fi Coverage Area

These instructions assume that the phone is not within the range of an access point that is broadcasting an Bell MTS Wireless SSID. Please ensure the phone is registered on the network.

Perform these steps:

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on (using the Manage Connections icon).
  2. Select Set Up Wi-Fi Network OR Wi-Fi Network (may need to scroll down).
  3. Press Menu key then select Manually Connect to Network.
  4. Enter Bell MTS Wireless in the SSID field  then select Next (Note that Bell MTS Wireless must be typed exactly the way it is shown).
  5. Select WPA/WPA2 Enterprise from the Security Type drop down menu.
  6. Select EAP-SIM from Enterprise Sub-Type drop down menu then select Save.
  7. Select Saved Wi-Fi Networks (may require selecting setup Wi-Fi network again).
  8. If other Wi-Fi networks are listed in addition to "Bell MTS Wireless", perform these steps. Otherwise, go to Step 9.
    1. With "Bell MTS Wireless" highlighted, press Menu key and select Move.
    2. Select Continue.
    3. Using the Trackpad, move "Bell MTS Wireless" to the top of the list and press the Trackpad to drop it there.
  9. Select Bell MTS Wireless.
  10. Select SSID Broadcasted and Allow Inter-access point handover to enable these features.
  11. Select Save.
In Wi-Fi Coverage Area

These instructions assume that the phone is within the range of an access point that is broadcasting an Bell MTS Wireless SSID. Please ensure the phone is registered on the network.

Perform these steps:

  1. Turn Wi-Fi radio On (using the Manage Connections icon).
  2. Select Set Up Wi-Fi Network OR Wi-Fi Network (may need to scroll down).
  3. From the list of available Wi-Fi networks Select Bell MTS Wireless.
  4. From Enterprise Sub-Type drop down menu Select EAP-SIM then Connect (the message "Connecting to Bell MTS Wireless" will display. Then the message "Manually connecting to network was successful" will display upon successful authentication and authorization (refer to Troubleshooting section of this page if message is different).
  5. Select OK then select Saved Wi-Fi Networks (may need to scroll down).
  6. If other Wi-Fi networks are listed in addition to Bell MTS Wireless, perform the following steps. Otherwise, go to Step 7.
    1. With "Bell MTS Wireless" highlighted, press Menu key and select Move.
    2. Select Continue.
    3. Using the Trackpad, move "Bell MTS Wireless" to the top of the list and press the Trackpad to drop it there.
  7. Select Bell MTS Wireless.
  8. Select Allow Inter-access point handover.
  9. Select Save.
Troubleshooting
  • Occasionally, on some BlackBerry devices, you may receive the error message "Failed to associate with the network", although the phone has already connected to the Wi-Fi network. Press OK and ensure a check mark appears beside Bell MTS Wireless indicating successful connection and proceed. If phone has not connected, ensure good coverage and attempt connection again.
  • After a previous failed attempt, you might receive the following error message when you try to connect again, "Connection failed due to incorrect network credentials. Verify saved network's security setting". To reconnect again:
    1. Select OK.
    2. Ensure Enterprise Sub-Type is set to EAP-SIM.
    3. Select Connect.
